How does operative hysteroscopy work?

A Hysteroscope sends a view of the uterine cavity to a monitor. Fluid gently expands the cavity so the surgeon can see its lining and guide small instruments. Depending on the finding, tissue may be removed, a polyp or fibroid may be treated, scar tissue may be divided, or a uterine septum may be corrected.

The procedure may help investigate or treat abnormal bleeding, fertility problems, Asherman Syndrome, Uterine Fibroids or a Uterine Septum. It does not examine the outside of the uterus or treat every cause of recurrent miscarriage.

Your team will explain fasting, medicines and the planned anaesthetic. Arrange transport if sedation or anaesthesia is used. Mild cramping and light bleeding can occur afterward; use the recommended pain relief and follow instructions about bathing, sex, tampons and exercise.

Contact the surgical team urgently for heavy bleeding, severe or increasing pelvic pain, fever, fainting, persistent vomiting, foul-smelling discharge or difficulty passing urine after the procedure.
