How does microdiscectomy work?

After imaging identifies the affected level, the surgeon reaches the spine through a small incision in the back. A Surgical Microscope provides a magnified view of the nerve and disc area. The surgeon moves the nerve gently aside and removes only the loose disc material or tissue causing compression. The remaining disc is left in place whenever possible. The aim is to reduce leg symptoms caused by nerve irritation, such as pain, tingling, or weakness; it does not treat every source of back pain.

Ask which medicines to pause, how to protect the incision, and when walking, lifting, bending, work, and driving may resume. Gentle walking is often introduced early, followed by a gradual return to activity. Physiotherapy may help rebuild trunk and leg control when the surgeon considers it appropriate. An Epidural Steroid Injection may be discussed before surgery in selected situations. Endoscopic Spine Surgery is another approach that uses a different access method.

Contact the surgical team for fever, increasing wound redness or drainage, worsening weakness, new numbness, or severe pain that changes suddenly. Seek emergency care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals, or rapidly progressing leg weakness. Sciatica and Radiating Leg Pain can have several causes, so persistent symptoms need reassessment.

Ask which nerve is compressed, what the scan shows, what symptoms surgery is expected to help, what restrictions apply, and what symptoms would suggest recurrent nerve pressure.
