How does kinesiology taping work?

Short answer
Kinesiology taping uses flexible adhesive strips to change skin sensation, support movement awareness, and complement an active rehabilitation plan.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the tape may help
A therapist places the tape over or around an area such as the knee, ankle, or shoulder. The tape gently moves with the skin rather than rigidly immobilising a joint. Its contact may give the nervous system extra information about position and movement, helping some people notice and adjust a movement pattern. It may also feel supportive during activity, but it does not repair a torn ligament or replace strength and mobility work.
Application depends on the problem, skin condition, and activity. A strip used for patellofemoral pain is not automatically suitable for an ankle sprain or another ligament problem.
Using it safely
Have a trained clinician show you where and how to apply the tape, especially when swelling, altered sensation, or a recent injury is present. Apply it to clean, dry skin without covering an open wound. Test a small area if your skin is sensitive, and remove it slowly if it becomes uncomfortable. Pair taping with the exercises, load changes, and movement practice recommended for your condition.
When to seek care
Remove the tape and contact a clinician if you develop blistering, a spreading rash, burning, marked itching, or increasing swelling. Seek assessment for severe pain, inability to bear weight, a visibly unstable joint, new numbness, or symptoms that worsen instead of settling after an injury.
Questions for your doctor
What movement or symptom are we trying to change with tape? How long should I wear it, and which skin changes mean I should remove it? Which exercises should continue while the tape is on, and when should the injury be reassessed?

Questions people ask
Does kinesiology tape hold a joint in place?
It is flexible and does not function like a rigid brace or cast; its role is usually sensory and supportive.
Can I put tape over broken skin?
No. Avoid open wounds and remove tape if the surrounding skin becomes irritated.
