How Does Egg Freezing Work?

A fertility team first reviews your health, ovarian reserve and goals. Ovarian stimulation medicines encourage several follicles to grow during one treatment cycle. Ultrasound scans and blood tests help the team adjust timing and decide when the eggs are ready.

A trigger medicine prepares the eggs for collection. The eggs are then collected with a thin needle guided through the vagina to the ovaries, usually while you receive sedation. Mature eggs are exposed to a cryoprotectant and rapidly frozen using vitrification, then stored in carefully monitored conditions. Freezing does not guarantee that every egg will survive thawing or lead to a pregnancy.

Bring a list of medicines, previous pelvic surgery and relevant family history. Ask which tests will assess ovarian reserve, how stimulation will be monitored, what type of sedation is planned and how long normal activities may need to be modified. The number of eggs collected varies with age, ovarian reserve and response to medication.

If you later choose to use the eggs, they are thawed, fertilised with sperm in the laboratory and monitored as embryos before a transfer may be considered. Egg freezing is one form of fertility preservation; embryo freezing is another option that involves fertilisation before storage.

Contact your fertility clinic promptly for severe or worsening abdominal pain, marked swelling, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, faintness, heavy bleeding or a fever after treatment. These symptoms can signal a complication that needs assessment, including ovarian hyperstimulation. Use the clinic's urgent contact route if symptoms develop outside appointment hours.
