How does a CT scan work?

You lie on a table that moves through the opening of a CT scanner. The X-ray source rotates around you while detectors record the beams that pass through your body. A computer combines these measurements into thin slices, which can be viewed separately or reconstructed into a three-dimensional picture. You may need to hold your breath briefly so the images are sharp. Some examinations use an imaging contrast agent, taken by mouth or given into a vein, to make certain organs, blood vessels or abnormal areas easier to see. The scan itself is usually quick, but preparation and positioning take additional time.

Follow the centre's instructions about eating, drinking and regular medicines. Tell the radiology team if you might be pregnant, have had a reaction to contrast before, or have kidney problems. Remove metal objects when asked and remain still during image capture. If contrast is used, you may notice warmth or a brief unusual taste; tell staff immediately about itching, swelling or difficulty breathing. Afterward, follow any drinking instructions and ask when and how the result will be discussed. A CT image can show a finding such as a lung nodule, but imaging alone does not always identify its cause.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, faintness or widespread hives during or after contrast. Contact the imaging team for a delayed rash, ongoing vomiting or worsening pain at an injection site. These reactions are uncommon, but prompt assessment matters. If you feel unwell after a scan, mention the timing and any contrast exposure when contacting a clinician.
