How does clubfoot casting work?

A specialist gently stretches the foot toward a better position and applies a cast that holds the change from the toes to the upper leg. After the cast is removed, the foot is examined and another cast is placed with a further gradual correction. The process addresses the foot’s inward turn, downward pointing, and tight soft tissues step by step rather than forcing the whole correction at once. Plaster of Paris may be used because it can be moulded closely around the leg and foot.

Clubfoot is present from birth and can affect the shape, flexibility, and alignment of the foot. After casting, some babies need a small procedure to release a tight heel cord. A brace is then used according to the specialist’s schedule because the foot can drift back toward its earlier position while it grows.

Keep the cast dry and check the toes several times a day. They should remain warm and their colour should return after gentle pressure. Keep the cast edges protected, avoid placing anything inside it, and follow instructions for clothing, bathing, and safe carrying. Attend every cast-change visit so the team can assess skin, circulation, and correction. Once bracing begins, use it for the prescribed schedule and bring it to reviews as your child grows.

Contact the clinic promptly if the cast slips, cracks, becomes wet, smells unusual, or causes rubbing. Seek urgent help if toes are blue, pale, cold, very swollen, or cannot move, or if your baby is unusually unsettled and cannot be comforted. Do not wait for the next appointment when circulation or skin injury may be affected.
