How does CDK4/6 inhibitor therapy work?

CDK4 and CDK6 help control a checkpoint before a cell copies its DNA and divides. Blocking these signals can hold susceptible cancer cells in a non-dividing state. The medicines are commonly considered for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, with the exact role depending on whether treatment is being given after surgery or for advanced disease.

These tablets do not remove a tumour immediately, and they do not suit every person. The oncology team considers the cancer’s features, previous treatment, other illnesses and possible medicine interactions.

Take the prescribed medicine on its planned schedule and follow instructions about food, missed doses and storage. Blood tests help monitor blood counts and liver function. Tell the team about fever, infection symptoms, unusual bruising, persistent diarrhoea, marked tiredness or breathlessness. Give them a complete list of medicines and supplements because interactions can affect treatment.

Contact your oncology team urgently for a fever or other infection symptoms while taking treatment, because low white-cell counts can make infection harder to handle. Seek immediate help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion or rapidly worsening weakness. Do not change or pause treatment without clinical advice unless an urgent clinician tells you to do so.
