How does bone grafting work?

A surgeon first prepares the area by removing unhealthy tissue and shaping the space. The graft may come from another part of your body, from a screened donor source, or from a synthetic material. It is positioned where bone is missing or needs extra support, sometimes alongside plates, screws, or another fixation device. The graft acts as a scaffold: nearby bone-forming cells can move into its spaces, while blood supply and healing tissue gradually connect the area. A graft does not simply stay as a permanent replacement; depending on its type, it may be remodelled, incorporated, or partly replaced by your own bone.

Bone grafting may be considered when a fracture has a gap, when bone has been weakened after removal of a benign bone tumour, or when infection has damaged bone after osteomyelitis. The exact choice depends on the location, size, stability, and condition of the bone.

Follow the surgical team’s instructions about wound care, medicines, weight-bearing, and movement. Do not place extra load through the treated limb until imaging and examination show that healing is progressing. Keep the incision protected and attend follow-up appointments, because scans help the surgeon judge graft incorporation and fixation. Smoking and nicotine can interfere with blood flow and bone healing, so ask for help stopping before surgery if relevant to you.

Contact your care team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or a wound that opens. Seek urgent help for sudden loss of movement or feeling, a limb that becomes unusually pale or cold, severe swelling, or breathing difficulty. These signs need assessment rather than waiting for the next planned visit.

Ask which graft source is proposed, what will hold the bones steady, how much weight or movement is allowed, and which scan will show progress. You can also ask how your medicines, nicotine use, diabetes, or previous infection may affect healing.
