How common is wrist pain in scaphoid fracture?

The scaphoid is a small bone on the thumb side of the wrist. Pain may be strongest in the hollow just below the base of the thumb, and pressing that area or gripping can make it worse. Swelling may be mild, so a fracture can be easy to underestimate. Wrist pain alone does not identify the cause; a sprain and other injuries can feel similar. A clinician may examine tenderness, movement and grip, then decide whether imaging or repeat assessment is needed.

After a wrist injury, keep the wrist supported and avoid lifting, pushing or activities that increase pain. Ice wrapped in cloth for short periods may help swelling, and keeping the hand raised can be comfortable. Do not use pain improvement as proof that the bone is intact. Arrange a medical assessment promptly when pain is focused on the thumb side, follows a fall or continues with gripping. Follow the advice given about support and activity while the injury is being clarified.

Seek urgent care if the hand becomes numb, unusually cold or pale, the fingers cannot move normally, the wrist looks deformed, or pain is severe after an injury. Prompt evaluation is also sensible when thumb-side tenderness or swelling persists. Early examination matters because an unrecognised scaphoid injury can need specific protection and follow-up.
