How common is vomiting in meningitis?

Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Vomiting can occur with a strong headache, fever, neck stiffness, light sensitivity, marked sleepiness, irritability, or confusion. Babies may feed poorly, become unusually sleepy, or have a high-pitched cry rather than describe a headache. Vomiting has numerous other causes, so it cannot identify meningitis on its own; the combination of symptoms and the person's overall condition is more informative.

Seek urgent medical assessment when vomiting occurs with fever, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, a seizure, unusual drowsiness, or a new rash that does not fade when pressed. Do not wait for every symptom to appear. Keep the person supervised, avoid giving food or drink if they are too sleepy to swallow safely, and tell clinicians when the vomiting and other symptoms began. Do not share cups or utensils while an infectious illness is being considered.

Call emergency services immediately for reduced consciousness, difficulty waking, breathing changes, a seizure, severe neck stiffness, rapidly worsening headache, or a rapidly spreading rash. Meningitis can progress quickly and needs professional evaluation; home observation is not a safe substitute when these warning signs are present.
