How common is vomiting blood in stomach cancer?

Bleeding higher in the digestive tract may be vomited as fresh red blood or as dark material that resembles coffee grounds. Stomach cancer can bleed when a tumour affects the stomach lining. However, ulcers, inflammation, tears after forceful vomiting, and other digestive conditions can also cause bleeding.

You cannot tell from appearance alone how serious the bleeding is or where it began. Black tarry stools, light-headedness, rapid weakness, abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, and reduced ability to eat are details that need to be shared with the medical team.

Seek urgent medical care straight away if you vomit blood or dark coffee-ground material. Tell the clinician about the timing, colour, approximate amount, stool colour, recent retching, and any medicines that may affect bleeding. These details can support quick assessment and treatment.

If vomiting continues, avoid taking food or drink unless the emergency team advises otherwise. Have another person stay with you if possible, particularly if you feel unsteady, and do not drive yourself to care.

Call emergency services for heavy bleeding, collapse, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, clammy skin, breathing difficulty, severe abdominal pain, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening. Emergency evaluation is appropriate even when the bleeding seems to have stopped.
