How common is vaginal discharge in bacterial vaginosis?

Discharge linked with bacterial vaginosis may be thinner than usual and can look greyish or whitish. A strong, fish-like smell may be more noticeable after sex or during a menstrual period. Some people have little irritation, while others notice mild burning or discomfort when passing urine. These features can overlap with thrush, sexually transmitted infections, or other causes, so appearance and smell alone cannot identify the cause.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the discharge is new, persistent, recurrent, or accompanied by smell, irritation, or urinary discomfort. Testing can help distinguish bacterial vaginosis from other infections and guide treatment. Avoid vaginal douching and fragranced washes, which can irritate the area or disturb its natural balance.
