How common is tremor in alcohol use disorder?

Alcohol can affect the brain and nervous system over time. Tremor may appear as fine shaking of the hands, particularly between drinks or after waking. Sweating, anxiety, nausea, poor sleep, a fast heartbeat and irritability can occur alongside it.

A tremor can have other causes, including medicines, thyroid problems, low blood sugar and neurological conditions. The timing of shaking in relation to alcohol use matters. A clinician can assess your symptoms, drinking pattern, general health and medicines without treating the conversation as a judgement.

If you drink heavily or have had withdrawal symptoms before, do not abruptly stop without medical advice. Withdrawal can become dangerous, and a supervised plan may include monitoring, supportive care and prescribed treatment. Tell a clinician how much and how often you drink, when the last drink was, and whether you have had seizures or confusion.

Avoid driving while shaking, confused or unwell. Keep fluids nearby if you can drink safely, and ask a trusted person to stay with you while you arrange care.

Call emergency services for a seizure, hallucinations, severe confusion, collapse, chest pain, trouble breathing or uncontrollable shaking. These can be signs of severe withdrawal or another emergency. Seek same-day medical advice for worsening tremor with sweating, vomiting, agitation, fever or a racing heartbeat.
