How common is testicular pain in mumps?

Mumps is a viral infection that often begins with swelling near the cheeks or jaw, fever, headache and tiredness. In some people, inflammation develops in a testicle, usually after other illness symptoms have appeared. The scrotum may become swollen, tender or heavy, and pain can affect one side or both.

Testicular pain has many possible causes, so it should not be used alone to identify mumps. A clinician may ask about vaccination, recent contact with illness, fever and swelling, then examine you and arrange tests if needed. Avoid close contact while contagious advice is being clarified.

Contact a healthcare professional if mumps is suspected or if testicular pain develops during a suspected infection.
