Short answer

Swollen lymph nodes are a common presentation of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, but swollen nodes alone do not establish the cause.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What swollen nodes can be like

Lymph nodes are small structures that support the immune system. When enlarged, they may be noticed as a lump in the neck, armpit or groin. In chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, enlarged nodes can be part of the presentation and may or may not be tender. Infections, inflammation and other conditions can also make nodes swell, so the location, duration, associated symptoms and examination findings all matter.

What to do if you notice a lump

Arrange a medical appointment for a new node that remains enlarged, grows, or occurs with other unexplained symptoms. Note where you first felt it, whether it is painful, whether more than one area is involved, and any recent infection. A clinician may examine the node and nearby areas, review your health history, and discuss whether blood tests, imaging or another assessment is appropriate.

When to seek faster help

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, severe weakness, high fever, or a very unwell feeling. Contact a clinician promptly for an enlarged node with persistent fever, drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss, easy bruising or recurrent infections. These symptoms need assessment without assuming a specific cause.

Questions for your clinician

Ask what may be causing the enlarged node, whether its size or location changes the assessment, and which tests could clarify the cause. Ask what changes should prompt you to return earlier.

Questions people ask

Are swollen lymph nodes always painful?

No. Enlarged lymph nodes can be tender or painless. Pain is only one feature a clinician considers when assessing them.

What other symptoms should I report?

Mention fever, night sweats, unintentional weight loss, repeated infections, bruising, fatigue, or changes in the size or number of lumps.
