How common is skin swelling in hives?

Hives are raised, itchy areas that can change shape and appear in different places. Deeper swelling, called angioedema, may affect the lips, eyelids, hands, feet, or other areas. It may feel tight or sore rather than intensely itchy. Individual welts often fade while new ones appear elsewhere.

Keep the skin cool, avoid scratching, and wear loose clothing. Note recent foods, medicines, infections, heat, pressure, or exercise that preceded the episode. Follow the treatment plan given by your clinician; ask before taking a new medicine, especially if you have other health conditions or take regular medicines. Avoid a suspected trigger until you have received appropriate advice.

Get emergency help immediately if swelling affects the tongue or throat, or if you have trouble breathing, swallowing, speaking, severe dizziness, or faintness. A widespread flare with feeling very unwell also needs urgent assessment. Recurrent hives, persistent swelling, or symptoms after a new medicine should be reviewed by a clinician.
