How common is skin swelling in cellulitis?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of deeper skin tissues. The affected area may look red and swollen, feel warm, and become sore. It can expand beyond the initial spot, and the skin may feel tight. Fever, chills, or feeling generally unwell can occur.

Swelling by itself has many possible causes and does not establish [Cellulitis](/conditions/cellulitis/). Rapid change, tenderness, warmth, and a spreading area make prompt assessment more important than judging the swelling alone.

Arrange medical assessment promptly if swelling is new, warm, painful, red, or enlarging. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and raise an affected limb when comfortable. Marking the edge of redness can help show whether it is spreading. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them exactly as directed and seek advice if symptoms worsen or do not start settling.
