How common is cracked skin in psoriasis?

Psoriasis can produce raised areas of inflamed skin with scale. When a plaque is thick and dry, movement can pull the surface apart, forming a fissure. This can occur on palms, soles, fingers, around joints, or in any site where the skin is repeatedly stretched or rubbed.

A fissure may sting, bleed a little, or make gripping and walking uncomfortable. Its severity is not a reliable measure of the extent of psoriasis elsewhere. Other causes of cracking include irritant dermatitis, fungal infection, and ordinary dryness, so a new pattern deserves an appropriate assessment.

Use a plain moisturiser frequently to soften scale and reduce surface tightness. Apply it after washing, and use gentle cleansing rather than abrasive scrubbing. Try to avoid picking at scale or forcing stiff skin over a joint, which can widen an existing crack.

Psoriasis treatment is tailored to the body area and the type of plaque. A dermatologist can advise whether a prescribed topical treatment, a protected dressing, or a different plan is suitable. Tell them if hand or foot symptoms are interfering with work, walking, or daily care.

Contact a clinician when cracks are deep, repeatedly bleeding, painful, or do not improve with the plan you have been given. Obtain prompt care if there is spreading redness, heat, swelling, discharge, or fever. These changes may need treatment separate from psoriasis management.
