How common is cracked skin in atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis often causes dry, itchy and inflamed skin. When the barrier loses moisture, movement across areas such as the hands, fingers, lips, elbows or behind the knees can pull the surface apart. Scratching can deepen fissures and increase soreness. Cracked skin can also result from other forms of dryness or irritation, so the surrounding rash and history matter.

Apply a thick, fragrance-free emollient regularly, especially after a short lukewarm wash. Pat dry rather than rubbing, cover painful splits with a clean dressing when appropriate, and avoid picking at flakes or scabs. Reduce exposure to harsh soaps, detergents and very dry air. A clinician can prescribe treatment to control inflammation and itching when moisturising alone is not enough.

Arrange medical advice if cracks are deep, repeatedly bleeding, increasingly painful or limiting movement. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever or rapidly worsening symptoms, which can signal infection. Cracks around the eyes, lips or hands may need specific care because those areas are easily irritated.
