How common are skin bumps in milia?

Milia are tiny cysts containing trapped keratin beneath the surface of the skin. They commonly look like white or skin-coloured beads and usually feel firm rather than soft. The cheeks, eyelids, and nose are frequent locations, although milia can occur elsewhere. They are different from acne and do not have the same type of inflamed, oily contents. New bumps around the eyes should be examined if their appearance is unusual or uncertain.

Cleanse gently and use non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen suited to the area. Do not squeeze, pierce, or scrape milia at home, especially near the eye, because this can cause injury, infection, or a mark. If a bump persists or bothers you cosmetically, a trained clinician can confirm what it is and remove it using an appropriate sterile technique.

Arrange an assessment if a bump becomes red, painful, swollen, or drains, or if several lesions appear suddenly after a skin injury or irritating treatment. Seek urgent help for eye pain, vision change, marked eyelid swelling, or a rapidly worsening reaction. Professional advice is also sensible when a changing bump does not resemble typical milia.
