How common is shortness of breath in thymoma?

A thymoma is a growth arising from the thymus, an organ in the upper chest behind the breastbone. If it presses on nearby airways, lungs, blood vessels, or other chest structures, a person may notice breathlessness, cough, chest discomfort, or a feeling of pressure. Some thymomas cause no symptoms and are found during imaging done for another reason. Breathlessness is not specific to thymoma and should be evaluated in its own right.

Make a medical appointment for new, persistent, or worsening breathlessness. Your clinician may ask when it began, whether it changes with activity or lying down, and whether there is cough, chest pain, voice change, facial swelling, or swallowing difficulty. They may examine your chest and arrange tests based on the findings. Bring a list of medicines and any previous chest imaging if available.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe breathing difficulty, chest pain or pressure, fainting, blue or grey lips, coughing blood, or new confusion. Prompt assessment is also needed for swelling of the face, neck, or arms, or for breathlessness that quickly becomes worse. These symptoms can reflect several serious problems and need timely evaluation.
