How common is shortness of breath in lung cancer?

Breathlessness may occur with a cough, chest discomfort, wheezing, repeated chest infections, coughing blood, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss. These symptoms are not specific to lung cancer, and shortness of breath by itself cannot identify its cause. Assessment may include listening to the chest, checking oxygen levels, reviewing smoking and exposure history, and arranging imaging or other tests when appropriate.

Tell your cancer team or clinician how far you can walk, whether symptoms wake you, and whether they began suddenly or gradually. Sit upright, pace activities, and use any prescribed inhalers or oxygen exactly as directed. Do not dismiss a new change in breathing as part of the diagnosis; infection, a blood clot, fluid, or treatment effects may need specific care.

Call emergency services for sudden severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, coughing a large amount of blood, or difficulty speaking. Contact the treating team promptly for a noticeable increase in breathlessness, fever, new wheeze, or a fall in oxygen readings if you monitor them at home.

Ask what may be driving your breathlessness, which tests are planned, and whether medicines, drainage, rehabilitation, or breathing techniques could help. Clarify whom to contact outside appointments and which symptoms should trigger immediate help.
