How common is shortness of breath in anaemia in cancer?

Anaemia in cancer may develop from the illness itself, inflammation, bleeding, reduced nutrition, kidney problems or treatment effects. With fewer effective red blood cells or less haemoglobin, tissues receive less oxygen. Breathlessness may therefore occur with activity alongside fatigue, dizziness, paleness or a fast heartbeat.

Breathlessness during cancer care has other possible causes, including infection, a lung condition, heart strain, fluid buildup or a blood clot. The symptom should be reported rather than attributed to anaemia without assessment. A blood count, examination and review of treatment help the oncology team decide what is happening.

Contact the cancer care team about new or increasing breathlessness, reduced ability to walk, dizziness or unusual tiredness. Keep a note of when it occurs, whether it happens at rest, and any fever, cough, chest pain or bleeding. Continue prescribed medicines unless the treating team tells you otherwise, and do not begin iron or other supplements without advice.

Sit upright, pace activities and ask for help with tasks while symptoms are being assessed. The team may review recent blood results, medicines, treatment timing and signs of infection or other complications.

Call emergency services for sudden or severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue lips, coughing blood or a rapid decline. Contact the oncology team urgently for breathlessness at rest, fever, new wheeze, active bleeding or symptoms that worsen after treatment.

Ask whether your blood count or treatment could explain the symptom, which tests are needed, and whether you need treatment for anaemia or another cause. Ask who to contact outside clinic hours and which changes require emergency help.
