How common is seizure in meningitis?

Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord. Infection-related inflammation can disturb normal brain activity, leading to a seizure. Other possible features include fever, severe headache, vomiting, light sensitivity, neck stiffness, drowsiness or confusion. Babies may instead be irritable, feed poorly or have a bulging soft spot.

A seizure does not identify the cause by itself. Meningitis can be caused by different organisms and may need hospital tests and treatment. Do not wait for every symptom to appear before seeking help if a person has a seizure with fever, altered awareness or a severe headache.

Move hard or sharp objects away, protect the head, and time the seizure. Once safe, place the person on their side and check that they are breathing. Never restrain jerking movements, put anything in the mouth or give fluids to someone who is not fully awake.

Suspected meningitis requires urgent medical assessment. Tell clinicians about fever, recent illness, medicines, rash, travel and the seizure pattern. Avoid sharing cups or close contact with saliva until a clinician explains whether infection-control precautions are needed.

Call emergency services immediately for a seizure with fever, stiff neck, severe headache, rash, confusion, extreme sleepiness, breathing problems or collapse. Also call if the seizure lasts longer than expected, repeats, causes injury or is the person’s first seizure. Keep the person monitored while help is coming.
