How common are reduced baby movements in fetal growth restriction?

Fetal growth restriction means a baby is smaller than expected or is not growing as expected in pregnancy. Reduced movement can occur when a baby has less energy or when the placenta is not delivering enough oxygen and nutrients. Movement patterns vary with gestational age, sleep periods, and the baby's position, but you know your baby's usual pattern best.

A maternity team may use an examination, fetal heart monitoring, ultrasound growth measurements, and assessment of blood flow through the placenta and cord.

A normal check at an earlier visit does not replace assessment of a new movement change. If you cannot reach your maternity unit, go to the nearest emergency department.
