Short answer

Bleeding After Menopause is a very common presentation of Endometrial Polyps, but it does not by itself confirm the diagnosis.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Imaging or direct examination may identify a polyp and guide sampling.

How polyps can cause bleeding

An endometrial polyp is a growth from the lining of the uterus. Its surface can be delicate and may bleed, causing spotting, blood-stained discharge or bleeding after menopause. A polyp may cause no symptoms at other times, so the absence of further bleeding does not explain what caused the first episode.

Other causes include thinning vaginal tissue, hormone effects, infection, endometrial hyperplasia and womb cancer. Looking at the symptom alone cannot separate these possibilities.

What to do next

Arrange a medical assessment for any bleeding after menopause, even when it is light or occurs only once. Keep a note of timing, amount, colour, pain and discharge. A clinician may use an examination, ultrasound or a camera test inside the womb; a removed polyp can be examined to clarify its nature. When to seek urgent care

Get urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy, does not settle, or comes with faintness, severe pain, fever or significant weakness. Prompt review is needed for worsening symptoms rather than waiting for a routine visit.

Questions for your doctor

Could a polyp explain the bleeding? Which scan or procedure would show it? Should the polyp be removed or sampled? What symptoms should prompt urgent review?

Questions people ask

Can an endometrial polyp bleed only once?

Yes. Bleeding may stop and return, but any postmenopausal bleeding should still be assessed.

Is every endometrial polyp cancerous?

No. Polyps have different characteristics, and examination or sampling is needed to understand an individual polyp.
