How common are pimples in folliculitis?

Folliculitis starts around a hair follicle, so the bumps may be centred on individual hairs. They can itch, sting, or feel sore and may appear in areas exposed to shaving, sweating, tight clothing, friction, or shared water. Some cases are linked to bacteria, yeast, or irritation. Acne can look similar, but the location, itch, timing, and trigger help guide diagnosis.

Pause shaving and reduce rubbing while the skin settles. Shower after heavy sweating, change damp clothing, and use a clean towel rather than sharing one. Wash gently and avoid scrubbing, picking, or applying several active products at once. If the eruption continues or returns, a clinician can determine whether treatment for infection, yeast, or irritation is needed.

Arrange an examination if bumps spread, become increasingly painful, form larger boils, drain extensively, or fail to improve after removing a likely trigger. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, red streaks, or feeling significantly unwell. Recurrent folliculitis may need a plan to identify and avoid its trigger.

Ask whether the bumps are folliculitis or acne, whether testing is needed, and which hair-removal or skincare changes could prevent recurrence. Describe recent shaving, sweating, swimming, new products, and medicines.
