How common is pelvic pain in ovarian cysts?

An ovarian cyst may cause one-sided pelvic aching, pressure, heaviness, or pain during movement or sex. Some cysts cause no symptoms. Discomfort can change as a cyst grows, leaks, bleeds, or presses on nearby structures. The timing may relate to the menstrual cycle, but pain can also occur outside a period.

Pelvic pain is not specific to ovarian cysts. Other reproductive, urinary, bowel, and muscle-related conditions can feel similar. An examination and, when appropriate, imaging can help identify whether an ovary or another structure is involved.

Arrange a medical review for new, persistent, or recurring pain, especially when it is one-sided or affects periods, sex, movement, or daily activity. Track the location, intensity, timing, bleeding, nausea, and any relationship to your cycle. Mention pregnancy possibility and medicines at the appointment.

Follow-up may be advised when a cyst is found, because its appearance and symptoms help guide management. Do not try to diagnose the cause from pain alone.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pelvic pain, pain with repeated vomiting, faintness, marked weakness, fever, heavy vaginal bleeding, or a swollen or very tender abdomen. These symptoms can signal a complication that needs prompt assessment, including twisting or rupture.
