How common is oily skin in seborrheic dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis often shows up in oil-prone zones such as the eyebrows, creases beside the nose, hairline, ears, beard area, and scalp. Along with a shiny or greasy surface, skin may have flaky scale, redness, or itch. The scale can be fine and dry-looking or more adherent when mixed with oil. These features can come and go, and other facial skin conditions may look similar.

Cleanse affected facial skin with a mild product and lukewarm water, avoiding abrasive scrubs and fragranced products that sting. Rinse haircare products away from the forehead, ears, and neck. Use only a light layer of moisturiser if your skin feels dry, and select non-comedogenic makeup or sunscreen. If you have been advised to use a medicated product, apply it only as directed and stop if a strong reaction develops.

Arrange care when the rash is persistent, painful, cracked, crusted, or spreading, or when it affects the eyelids. Get prompt advice for swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly increasing tenderness. A clinician can check whether seborrheic dermatitis explains the oily, scaly skin and recommend an approach for the involved area.
