How common is nosebleed in sinusitis?

Sinusitis can cause congestion, facial pressure, nasal discharge, reduced smell, and postnasal drip. Inflamed passages are easier to irritate, especially when mucus forms crusts near the nostril opening. A small streak of blood in mucus or a brief front-of-nose bleed can happen in this setting. A nosebleed may also arise separately from sinusitis, including after local trauma or exposure to dry air.

For active bleeding, sit forward and apply uninterrupted pressure to the soft part of the nose. Avoid forceful blowing and avoid inserting tissues or cotton into the nostril. Saline rinses or sprays can be soothing for congestion, but use clean equipment and stop if they worsen irritation. Follow directions for nasal decongestants carefully, as prolonged or unsuitable use can cause problems.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, bleeding that does not settle with pressure, a nosebleed after a major facial injury, or symptoms such as fainting. Contact a clinician for recurrent episodes, one-sided blockage with persistent bleeding, worsening facial swelling, eye symptoms, or a fever with marked deterioration. Mention blood-thinning medicines and any previous nasal surgery.

Ask whether your symptoms fit sinusitis or another nasal condition, which measures may ease dryness, and whether any current nasal treatment could be irritating the lining. If symptoms repeatedly return, ask what examination or follow-up is appropriate.
