How common is loss of smell in chronic sinusitis?

Chronic sinusitis can make smells seem faint, distorted or absent. A blocked nose may also reduce flavour because smell contributes strongly to how food tastes. Symptoms may fluctuate as nasal congestion changes, and a long-lasting change can occur even when facial pressure is mild. Loss of smell has other possible causes, so the symptom alone does not identify one condition.

Keep a note of when the change began, whether it affects both sides, and whether congestion, discharge, facial pressure or nasal polyps are present. Saline nasal rinsing may help clear mucus when used with safe water and clean equipment. A clinician can examine the nose and discuss treatment for inflammation; do not use decongestant sprays for longer than the product instructions advise.

Arrange a medical review if reduced smell persists, keeps returning or interferes with eating or safety. Seek urgent help for swelling around an eye, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, a stiff neck, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Contact a clinician promptly after a head injury or if the change is sudden and unexplained.
