Short answer

Loss of appetite is a very common presentation of gastroenteritis, especially while nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea are active.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why eating may feel difficult

Gastroenteritis irritates the stomach and bowel. Nausea, cramps, a bloated feeling, and the worry of vomiting after food can all reduce the desire to eat. This describes a symptom that can occur during gastroenteritis; loss of appetite also has many other possible causes.

For many people, appetite returns as the stomach settles and fluids are staying down. Hunger may come back gradually, so being able to drink comfortably can be a more useful early sign than feeling ready for a full meal.

Practical care at home

Prioritise small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if diarrhoea or vomiting is present. When you feel able to eat, try modest portions of plain foods that you find tolerable, rather than forcing a large meal.

Rest, avoid alcohol, and notice whether you are passing urine as usual. Keep food preparation hygienic and do not prepare meals for others while you have vomiting or diarrhoea.

When to get medical help

Seek urgent medical care for signs of dehydration such as very little urine, marked dizziness, confusion, or an inability to keep fluids down. Get prompt advice for blood in vomit or stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a high fever, or symptoms that are not improving.

Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and people with weakened immunity may need earlier assessment because fluid loss can become more difficult to manage.

Questions to raise at an appointment

Ask whether your symptoms fit gastroenteritis or whether another cause needs checking. You can also ask which drinks or foods are suitable for you, whether medicines could help nausea, and which changes should lead you to seek urgent care.

No. Fluids are usually the immediate priority; resume small amounts of food when you can tolerate them.

Can loss of appetite continue after diarrhoea stops?

It can take time for appetite to return. Seek advice if it persists, worsens, or comes with concerning symptoms.
