How common is limping in hip fracture?

Short answer
Limping is a common presentation of Hip Fracture, and a new limp after a fall needs urgent medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical concern
- A new limp with pain after a fall can signal a serious hip injury.
- Safe next step
- Avoid weight-bearing and arrange urgent assessment.
What limping can mean
A hip fracture can make weight-bearing painful or unsafe. Someone may take short steps, lean away from the injured side, or avoid putting weight through that leg. Some people cannot walk at all. Pain may be felt in the hip, groin, thigh, or sometimes the knee, so the location of discomfort does not identify the injury by itself. Limping can also occur with other problems, which is why examination and imaging may be needed.
What to do now
After a fall or direct impact, stop walking and keep the person as comfortable and still as possible. Do not try to straighten the leg or test walking repeatedly. Arrange emergency medical help, especially when there is severe pain, inability to stand, or an unusually turned-out leg. Tell the clinician how the injury happened, when the limp began, and whether blood-thinning medicine or other medicines are being taken.
When to seek care
Seek emergency care for a sudden limp after a fall, severe hip or groin pain, inability to bear weight, a shortened-looking leg, numbness, or a cold or pale foot. Do not wait for symptoms to settle overnight. If the limp developed without a clear injury, prompt assessment is still sensible when pain is worsening, walking is becoming harder, or there is fever or new weakness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether an X-ray or another scan is needed, which movements and weight-bearing limits are safest, and how pain should be managed while awaiting treatment. You can also ask how the fracture affects walking, what support is appropriate, and which warning signs should prompt immediate reassessment.

Questions people ask
Can someone walk with a hip fracture?
Some people can take a few steps despite a hip fracture, while others cannot walk. Walking ability does not rule the injury in or out.
Is every limp a hip fracture?
No. Limping has many possible causes. A new limp after trauma, especially with pain or difficulty bearing weight, needs urgent assessment.
