How common is light sensitivity in meningitis?

Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. That inflammation can make light uncomfortable and may occur with a severe headache, fever, neck stiffness, vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, or a rash. Symptoms do not always appear in the same order or all occur together. Light sensitivity has many less serious causes, including migraine and eye conditions, so it does not diagnose meningitis on its own. The concern is the combination of symptoms and a sudden change in how unwell someone feels.

If you are concerned about meningitis, seek urgent medical assessment rather than trying to manage it with rest, darkness, or pain relief at home. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, whether they are worsening, any recent illness, medicines taken, and whether there has been confusion, a rash, or difficulty staying awake. Keep the person accompanied if they seem very unwell or confused, and avoid driving yourself when urgent assessment is needed.

Get emergency help immediately for light sensitivity with a severe headache, fever, stiff neck, confusion, a seizure, a rash that does not fade with pressure, weakness, or reduced alertness. Emergency assessment is also needed for an infant who is unusually sleepy, difficult to wake, feeding poorly, or persistently inconsolable. Do not wait for every possible symptom to appear before seeking help.
