How common is light sensitivity in conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the clear tissue over the white of the eye and inside the eyelids. Irritation of this sensitive surface can make daylight, screens, or indoor lighting feel uncomfortable. Redness, grittiness, tears, itch, and discharge may occur at the same time, depending on the cause. Light sensitivity by itself does not show that conjunctivitis is responsible; dryness, a scratch on the eye surface, contact-lens problems, and inflammation deeper in the eye may need different care.

Avoid rubbing the eye and wash hands before and after touching the face or using eye drops. Remove contact lenses until a clinician says it is safe to wear them again. A clean cool compress and a dimmer environment may improve comfort. Do not share towels, eye makeup, or drops. A pharmacist or clinician can help identify whether lubricating drops, allergy treatment, or another approach fits your symptoms; avoid using leftover prescription eye drops.

Get same-day medical advice if light sensitivity is marked, eye pain is significant, vision changes, the eye was injured, or you wear contact lenses and have a red painful eye. Seek urgent assessment for sudden loss of vision, severe headache with eye symptoms, nausea or vomiting with eye pain, or a chemical splash. These features can indicate a condition that needs examination of the eye rather than home care alone.

Ask whether the pattern looks allergic, infectious, or irritant-related, and whether your cornea needs checking. Mention contact-lens use, any new drops or cosmetics, changes in vision, and whether one or both eyes began first.
