How common is knee pain in patellar tendinitis?

Short answer
Knee Pain is a common presentation of Patellar Tendinitis. Irritation of the tendon below the kneecap can make forceful knee straightening painful.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Symptom link
- Knee pain is common in patellar tendinitis.
- Typical location
- Tenderness may occur below the kneecap along the patellar tendon.
Recognising the usual pattern
Pain is often felt between the kneecap and the shinbone and may be tender when touched. Jumping, running, squatting, stairs, or repeated kicking can bring it on, and stiffness may follow activity. Symptoms may build gradually or appear after a change in training. Knee pain is not specific to patellar tendinitis, so the location and activity pattern need assessment.
Managing activity
Temporarily reduce jumping, sprinting, deep squats, and other movements that clearly increase pain. Keep comfortable daily movement and use a gradual strengthening plan guided by a physiotherapist or clinician. Do not test the tendon repeatedly by pushing through sharp pain. A review can also check the kneecap, joint, muscles, and nearby tendons.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment when pain interferes with sport, work, stairs, or ordinary walking, or when it is not settling with activity adjustment. Seek urgent care after a sudden snap, loss of strength to straighten the knee, major swelling, or inability to bear weight. A hot, red knee with fever also needs prompt medical attention.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pain is coming from the patellar tendon, how to modify training, which strengthening exercises are appropriate, and how quickly to progress activity.

Questions people ask
Can I continue exercising with patellar tendon pain?
You may be able to keep comfortable low-impact movement, but painful jumping or forceful loading should be reduced while you obtain tailored advice.
Is pain below the kneecap always patellar tendinitis?
No. Several knee structures can hurt in that area, so a clinician should assess the pattern and your movement.
