How common is joint swelling in rheumatoid arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis causes inflammation in the lining of joints. This can produce visible puffiness, warmth, tenderness, and stiffness, commonly in the hands, wrists, or feet, although other joints may be involved. Symptoms may affect matching joints on both sides, but this pattern is not required. Stiffness after waking or resting can make movement difficult. Swelling may fluctuate, and a quiet period does not prove that the underlying inflammation has gone. Joint swelling also occurs with injury, osteoarthritis, gout, and infection, so it needs context rather than a self-diagnosis.
