Short answer

Joint swelling is a common presentation of pseudogout, caused by inflammation triggered by calcium pyrophosphate crystals.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical attack
A painful, warm, red, swollen joint may develop during an acute episode.
Diagnosis
Symptoms overlap with infection and gout, so assessment may be needed.

How pseudogout may present

Pseudogout, also called calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, can cause an acute attack in a joint. Swelling may arrive with warmth, redness, stiffness, and substantial pain. The knee and wrist are common sites, although other joints can be affected. Some people have crystal deposits without an acute attack.

A hot swollen joint can also result from gout, infection, injury, or inflammatory arthritis. The symptoms overlap, so a new attack should be assessed rather than labelled from appearance alone. A clinician may use examination, imaging, or joint-fluid analysis to identify crystals and exclude infection.

Helpful steps during symptoms

Rest the joint in a supported position and avoid activities that increase pain. A wrapped cold pack used briefly may reduce discomfort for some people. Contact a clinician for treatment advice, particularly when the episode is new, severe, or different from previous attacks. Do not attempt to remove fluid or treat the joint with leftover medicines.

If pseudogout has been diagnosed, keep follow-up appointments and discuss recurrent attacks or persistent stiffness. A clinician can review medicines, kidney or stomach concerns, and other factors before recommending treatment. Gentle movement can resume as pain settles, without forcing the joint.

When to seek care promptly

Seek urgent care for a hot swollen joint with fever, chills, rapidly worsening pain, or a strong feeling of illness. Infection can occur alongside or resemble a crystal attack. Prompt review is also appropriate when you cannot walk, use the limb, or move the joint, or when swelling follows trauma.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be pseudogout, gout, infection, or an injury? Would joint-fluid testing clarify the cause? What should I do at the first sign of an attack, and which warning signs mean I should seek urgent care?
