Short answer

Joint swelling is a common presentation of gout, often appearing during an inflammatory flare in one joint.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

A new hot swollen joint needs clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

How gout swelling can behave

Gout occurs when urate crystals trigger inflammation in a joint. A flare may cause swelling with marked tenderness, warmth, redness, and pain that can make ordinary contact uncomfortable. The big toe is a familiar site, but the ankle, knee, midfoot, wrist, or another joint can also be involved.

Swelling has many possible causes, including injury, infection, other crystal conditions, and inflammatory arthritis. A new hot swollen joint should not be self-diagnosed as gout. Examination and, when needed, testing of joint fluid can help distinguish gout from conditions that require different treatment.

What to do during a flare

Rest the affected joint in a comfortable position, avoid pressure on it, and use a wrapped cold pack for brief periods if that feels soothing. Drink normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids. Contact a clinician promptly for advice about treatment, especially if this is your first suspected flare or your current plan is not controlling symptoms.

If gout is established, take prescribed medicines according to the instructions. Do not start, stop, or change long-term urate treatment without medical guidance. Keeping a record of triggers, affected joints, and response to treatment can support future decisions.

When to seek care promptly

Seek urgent assessment for a hot swollen joint with fever, chills, rapidly worsening pain, or feeling very unwell. Infection can resemble a gout flare and needs prompt treatment. Seek advice as well when swelling follows an injury, affects several joints unexpectedly, or prevents you from walking or using the limb.

Questions for your doctor

Could this swelling be gout or another condition? Would joint-fluid testing help? What should I take at the start of a flare, which medicines interact with it, and what symptoms require urgent review?

Questions people ask

Can gout swelling affect a joint other than the big toe?

Yes. Gout can affect the ankle, knee, foot, wrist, or another joint.

Can a gout flare look like an infection?

Yes. Both can cause a hot, red, painful swollen joint, so urgent assessment may be needed.
