How common is joint swelling in bursitis?

A bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion that helps tissues glide near a joint. Repeated pressure, kneeling, leaning, a blow, or another source of irritation can inflame it. The swelling may appear over the front of the knee, the elbow, the shoulder, or another pressure point, rather than deep inside the joint itself.

Bursitis can cause tenderness, warmth, and pain when the area is pressed or moved. Swelling can also occur with arthritis, injury, or infection, so its location and accompanying symptoms matter. A clinician may examine the area and decide whether fluid testing or imaging is useful.

Reduce the activity or pressure that aggravates the area and use comfortable movement within your limits. A wrapped cold pack for short periods may ease discomfort; protect the skin and stop if it irritates you. Avoid leaning on the swollen area, and use padding or a change in technique when kneeling or working.

Arrange a medical review when swelling persists, returns, or interferes with sleep, work, or movement. Do not try to drain it yourself. A clinician may recommend targeted treatment, exercises, or treatment for an underlying joint problem after checking the cause.

Seek prompt medical care if swelling becomes rapidly larger, red, hot, or intensely painful, or if you develop fever, chills, or feel unwell. These signs can occur with an infected bursa and need timely assessment. Get advice after a significant injury or when you cannot use the nearby joint normally.
