How fibromyalgia pain is experienced
Fibromyalgia can make pain signals feel amplified, so discomfort may be felt around joints even when the joint itself has no visible swelling or damage. Pain can move between areas or occur alongside muscle aching, tenderness, stiffness, poor sleep, fatigue and difficulty concentrating.
Symptoms often vary with stress, sleep disruption, illness, activity and changes in routine. Joint pain is not specific to fibromyalgia: swelling, warmth, prolonged morning stiffness or a new one-sided problem may point to another condition and deserves assessment rather than being attributed automatically to fibromyalgia.
Managing the day-to-day pattern
Keep a simple symptom diary covering sleep, activity, stress, pain locations and recovery after exertion. Gentle, gradual movement and a consistent sleep routine may help some people; increase activity slowly so that a temporary flare does not force a complete stop.
Review your plan with a clinician if pain changes, limits work or sleep, or comes with swelling. Treatment may combine movement support, sleep care, talking therapies and medicines chosen around your other health needs. Do not change prescribed medicines without advice.
When a new symptom needs review
Arrange prompt medical review for a hot, red or visibly swollen joint, new weakness, numbness, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever or pain after an injury. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, sudden loss of movement or confusion.
Questions for your doctor
Does my pain pattern fit fibromyalgia, or should we check for an inflammatory joint problem? Which activity increase is realistic for me? How can we address sleep, fatigue and pain together, and which new symptoms should trigger a review?

Questions people ask
Can fibromyalgia cause pain around the joints without swelling?
Yes. Pain may be felt around joints because the nervous system processes signals more intensely, even when the joint looks normal.
Does every new joint symptom belong to fibromyalgia?
No. Heat, redness, swelling, fever or a sudden change should be assessed for another cause.
