How common is jaundice in pancreatic cancer?

The pancreas lies close to the bile duct, which carries bile from the liver into the intestine. A tumour can narrow or block this duct, so bilirubin collects in the blood. Yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, itching, nausea, reduced appetite, or weight loss may follow. Jaundice is often more noticeable when the blockage is near the head of the pancreas.

The finding needs investigation, but it does not by itself establish the cause or describe the stage of cancer. Blood tests and imaging help the clinical team assess the blockage and plan care.

Contact a clinician promptly if yellowing is new or increasing, especially with dark urine, pale stools, itching, abdominal pain, or loss of appetite. A specialist may discuss treatment for the cancer and ways to restore bile flow, such as a drainage procedure, when suitable.

Seek urgent help for fever, chills, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, or rapidly worsening jaundice. These symptoms can indicate infection or another complication of bile duct blockage.

Ask where the blockage is, which tests are planned, whether bile drainage is needed, how itching or nausea can be managed, and who to call if symptoms worsen.
