How common are itchy eyes in pet allergy?

Pet allergy is an immune response to proteins found in animal skin flakes, saliva, or urine. These particles can reach the eyes directly or be transferred there on hands, clothing, furniture, and bedding. Eye itching may come with watering, redness, sneezing, a runny nose, or nasal itching. The pattern matters: symptoms that appear around a particular animal or in places where it spends time can be useful clues, but itchy eyes also have non-allergic causes.

Avoid rubbing your eyes, which can increase irritation. Wash your hands after touching an animal, rinse your face if particles may have reached it, and keep pets out of the bedroom where possible. A cool clean compress may soothe the eye area. A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose suitable allergy treatment, particularly if you wear contact lenses or have an eye condition.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, wheeze, swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms after exposure. Arrange a medical assessment for eye pain, sensitivity to light, changes in vision, thick discharge, or symptoms that keep returning despite avoiding the suspected trigger. These features need assessment because they can point to an eye problem other than simple allergy.
