How common are heavy periods in uterine fibroids?

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in or around the muscle of the womb. Depending on their size and position, they can change the surface area of the womb lining, interfere with the womb’s ability to tighten during a period, or press on nearby tissue. These effects can lead to heavier, longer, or more painful periods.

Some people with fibroids have no symptoms, while others notice pelvic pressure, frequent urination, or bleeding between periods. Heavy menstrual loss may contribute to iron-deficiency anaemia, which can cause tiredness, reduced stamina, dizziness, or breathlessness.
