How swimmer's ear affects hearing

Swimmer's ear is inflammation or infection of the outer ear canal. Swelling, moisture and debris can narrow that passage, so voices may sound muted or distant. Ear pain, itching, tenderness when the outer ear is touched, redness or discharge may appear as well. This differs from problems deeper in the ear, but symptoms can overlap. An examination helps identify the affected area and whether the eardrum can be seen.

Protect the ear

Keep the ear dry and pause swimming until a clinician says it is safe. Do not scratch the canal or use cotton buds, oils or leftover drops. A pharmacist or clinician can recommend suitable treatment and may prescribe drops to address inflammation or infection. Use them exactly as directed; a swollen canal may need special instructions for drops to reach the affected skin.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt care for worsening pain, spreading redness, fever, increasing discharge, or hearing that is rapidly changing. Seek urgent help for facial weakness, severe headache, swelling around the ear, marked dizziness, or feeling very unwell.
