How common is hearing loss in middle ear infection?

Infection and trapped fluid behind the eardrum can make sound transmission less efficient. Hearing may therefore seem dull or blocked, often with ear pain, pressure, fever, irritability or trouble sleeping. Children may not describe hearing loss; they might turn up the volume, ask for repetition or respond less to quiet sounds. The hearing change can remain while fluid settles, so improvement may not be immediate after pain eases.

Use only medicines recommended for the person and follow the prescribed instructions. Keep the ear dry if there is discharge, and do not put drops into it unless a clinician says they are suitable. Offer fluids and rest, and keep a child comfortable while arranging medical advice. A clinician can decide whether observation, pain relief, or specific treatment is appropriate after examining the ear.

Seek urgent help for swelling behind the ear, a very unwell appearance, severe worsening pain, facial weakness, stiff neck, confusion, or sudden hearing loss. Arrange review when hearing stays reduced, infections recur, symptoms worsen, or a child has balance problems or delayed responses. Persistent fluid may need a hearing check and follow-up.
