How common is headache in hypertension?

A headache does not show how high your blood pressure is and cannot diagnose Hypertension. Many headaches arise from migraine, tension, dehydration, infection, eyesight strain, or medicine effects. The reliable way to identify high blood pressure is a properly taken measurement, sometimes repeated on separate occasions or checked with home monitoring.

If you already have Hypertension, take prescribed treatment consistently and do not stop it because a headache improves. Keep a record of readings, symptoms, medicines, and factors such as missed doses or illness. A clinician can review the pattern and check for causes unrelated to blood pressure.

Arrange a blood pressure check if headaches are recurring or you have risk factors for Hypertension. Before a reading, rest quietly, sit with your back supported and feet on the floor, and keep your arm supported. Follow the monitor instructions and share unusual or repeated readings with a healthcare professional.

Use prescribed medicines as directed, limit excess salt if advised, stay active within your abilities, and attend follow-up appointments. Do not take extra tablets to lower a reading unless your prescriber has given you a clear plan.

Seek emergency care for a sudden, severe headache or headache with chest pain, severe breathlessness, confusion, fainting, seizure, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, or major vision change. These symptoms may signal a serious problem regardless of the blood pressure reading.
