How common is generalised weakness in sepsis?

Sepsis is a serious reaction to an infection that can disrupt normal organ function and circulation. A person may feel profoundly weak, extremely unwell, shivery, feverish or unusually cold, confused, breathless, dizzy, or unable to stay awake. It can start after infections in different parts of the body, and symptoms may change quickly. Weakness does not diagnose sepsis, but it should be considered alongside the overall illness and warning signs.

Do not wait at home to see whether a severe or rapidly worsening illness settles. Seek urgent medical assessment, particularly if an infection is suspected or a person has recently had surgery, an injury, or a medical procedure. Keep the person warm and observed while help is arranged. Bring details of recent symptoms, medicines, allergies, health conditions, and any recent infection treatment if this does not delay emergency care.

Call emergency services now for confusion, blue, grey, pale, or blotchy skin, difficulty breathing, a new inability to stay awake, collapse, a seizure, or very little urine. Urgent care is also needed for rapidly worsening weakness with fever, chills, severe pain, vomiting, or a fast heartbeat. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and those with a weakened immune system may need a lower threshold for urgent assessment.

After urgent care, ask what infection was suspected, what follow-up is needed, and which new symptoms should trigger reassessment. Discuss recovery of strength, medicines, wound care where relevant, and support needed at home.
