How common is frequent urination in urinary tract infection?

A urinary tract infection can irritate the bladder lining and create a frequent, urgent need to pass urine. You may feel that you need to go again soon after emptying the bladder, sometimes passing only a small amount. Burning or stinging, lower abdominal discomfort, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and blood in the urine can also occur. Not everyone has the same combination of symptoms. Frequent urination alone does not confirm an infection, because bladder irritation, pregnancy, medicines, and other conditions can cause it too.

Contact a clinician for advice if urinary symptoms persist, are uncomfortable, or return after settling. They may ask about your symptoms, medical history, pregnancy, and previous infections, and may request a urine sample. Drink regularly if you can, but do not force excessive fluids. Note the onset of symptoms and whether there is pain in the back, fever, discharge, or blood in the urine. Take antibiotics only when prescribed for the current illness, and complete them as directed if they are prescribed.

Seek urgent medical assessment for fever or chills, pain in the side or back below the ribs, vomiting, confusion, or feeling acutely unwell with urinary symptoms. Get urgent help if you cannot pass urine or if there is significant visible blood. These symptoms may need prompt evaluation for a more serious urinary problem.
