How common is flank pain in kidney stones?

A stone can irritate or partly block the tube carrying urine from a kidney to the bladder. Pain may begin in the side or back and travel towards the lower abdomen or groin. It can be sharp, gripping, or severe, with periods of easing and return. Nausea, vomiting, sweating, restlessness, or blood in the urine may accompany it. Flank pain has other possible explanations, so the symptom by itself cannot confirm a stone.

Contact a clinician for new, persistent, or significant flank pain, especially if urine looks bloody or passing urine is difficult. Assessment may include questions about the pain, examination, urine testing, and imaging when needed. Follow advice about fluids and pain relief; forcing large amounts of fluid during severe obstruction may make discomfort worse. Keep any stone passed for possible analysis if your clinician asks.

Seek urgent care for flank pain with fever or chills, repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, faintness, or worsening pain that cannot be controlled. Infection behind a blockage can become serious. Seek prompt advice as well if you have one functioning kidney, known kidney disease, are pregnant, or cannot maintain fluids.

Ask whether the pain pattern suggests a stone, whether urine or imaging tests are appropriate, what pain relief is suitable, and how to recognise obstruction or infection. Discuss your medication list, pregnancy possibility, prior stones, and any urinary difficulty.
